Background of the study
Phonetic errors are common in second language acquisition, often stemming from the interference of a learner’s native phonological system. Among Igbo students in Enugu, such errors in English pronunciation provide insight into the challenges faced in acquiring a second language (Chukwu, 2023). This study examines the types and frequency of phonetic errors, focusing on issues such as misarticulation of consonants, vowel substitution, and prosodic misalignments. Detailed acoustic analysis and perceptual testing are used to identify patterns of errors and their underlying causes, including transfer effects from Igbo to English. Understanding these errors is essential for developing targeted pronunciation training and instructional methods that address the specific needs of Igbo learners. By exploring the intersection of native language influence and second language learning, the study aims to contribute to the development of effective language teaching strategies and improve overall communicative competence (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite significant investment in English language education, Igbo students in Enugu continue to exhibit persistent phonetic errors that hinder effective communication. These errors, often resulting from negative transfer from Igbo phonology, affect academic performance and language proficiency (Chukwu, 2023). Limited research on the specific nature and frequency of these errors has impeded the development of focused remediation strategies. This study seeks to fill this gap by systematically analyzing the phonetic errors in second language acquisition, thereby providing empirical data to inform curriculum development and teacher training programs.
