Background of the study
Phonetic errors are common in second language acquisition, often stemming from the interference of a learner’s native phonological system. Among Igbo students in Enugu, such errors in English pronunciation provide insight into the challenges faced in acquiring a second language (Chukwu, 2023). This study examines the types and frequency of phonetic errors, focusing on issues such as misarticulation of consonants, vowel substitution, and prosodic misalignments. Detailed acoustic analysis and perceptual testing are used to identify patterns of errors and their underlying causes, including transfer effects from Igbo to English. Understanding these errors is essential for developing targeted pronunciation training and instructional methods that address the specific needs of Igbo learners. By exploring the intersection of native language influence and second language learning, the study aims to contribute to the development of effective language teaching strategies and improve overall communicative competence (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite significant investment in English language education, Igbo students in Enugu continue to exhibit persistent phonetic errors that hinder effective communication. These errors, often resulting from negative transfer from Igbo phonology, affect academic performance and language proficiency (Chukwu, 2023). Limited research on the specific nature and frequency of these errors has impeded the development of focused remediation strategies. This study seeks to fill this gap by systematically analyzing the phonetic errors in second language acquisition, thereby providing empirical data to inform curriculum development and teacher training programs.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To identify common phonetic errors in English among Igbo students.
  2. To analyze the acoustic characteristics of these errors.
  3. To recommend targeted pronunciation training interventions.

Research questions:

  1. What phonetic errors are most prevalent among Igbo students?
  2. How do these errors manifest acoustically?
  3. What teaching strategies can effectively reduce these errors?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Phonetic errors are significantly influenced by native Igbo phonology.
  2. Specific error patterns can be acoustically identified.
  3. Targeted training will reduce error frequency.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it examines phonetic errors in second language acquisition among Igbo students, providing crucial data for improving language instruction. The findings will guide educators in developing more effective pronunciation training methods and enhance overall English proficiency (Chukwu, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining phonetic errors in English among Igbo students in Enugu, focusing on acoustic and perceptual data.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Phonetic Errors: Mistakes in the production of speech sounds during language acquisition.
  2. Second Language Acquisition: The process of learning a language other than one’s native tongue.
  3. Negative Transfer: The interference of the native language in the acquisition of a second language.
